JONATHAN LEHRER TALKS WITH TAVIS

i watch tavis smiley's program on PBS at 12:30 am weekdays whenever i can, at least to see who tavis is interviewing.  i just want to recommend this show to you and the author jonathan lehrer.  lehrer was telling about his new book.  the subject of brainstorming sessions came up.  lehrer unequivocally, clearly explained that he no longer believes brainstorming sessions are the best arena/method to come up with good quality creative new ideas.
lehrer explained the analysis:  brainstorming sessions are run on the principle that all ideas are accepted uncritically because one does not want to discourage people from expressing seemingly impractical and crazy ideas. the sorting out and considering the worthiness of the ideas can be done later.  lehrer (or one whom he quoted) found that people take such sessions less seriously.  people don't expect to hear anything interesting because the "air" is clogged by these "silly" ideas and people's coddling, p.c. remarks.
lehrer found that a better approach is informal mixing of people from diverse disciplines (informal setting- like washing hands in the restrooms) where, also, people feel free to criticize their associates' ideas.  this criticizing (not personal attacks or gratuitous snide remarks) actually challenges the speaker of the idea to come up with an even better variation of the idea- or to see the impracticality of it.  as the bible says, "iron sharpens iron."

i'm glad to see people trying to get us out of that nice-ness rut.  God help them/us.

this relates to my vision for a book called "The 'We' Book of Christianity".
One principle i'd like to explore is "in order to be a successful effective follower of Jesus, one must be connected in a meaningful way to a group of Christian believers."

an additional principle is "one is not meaningfully connected to other Christians if one is not sharing the truth about problem areas of one's life and one's serious, deep beliefs on crucial subjects."

This second idea is difficult for me. i wonder if it is difficult for others.  i wonder if others agree with me on this.
